How we collect data
Most sources are accessed through their published public APIs or bulk downloads, with an identifying user agent, conservative rate limits and long-lived caching so we place minimal load on each service. A few - notably the school attainment datasets and Ofcom broadband coverage - are published only as one-off file downloads, which we retrieve by hand when a new release appears rather than polling for them. We do not scrape websites, bypass access controls or republish restricted datasets. If you operate one of these services and have any concern about our usage, contact us and we will resolve it promptly.
You can see whether each live source is currently responding, and when data was last refreshed, on our data status page.
